On Wednesday, August 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) triggered its highest level of international health alert in the face of the outbreak of MPOX cases in Africa, which has caused more than 16,000 illnesses and 548 deaths since the beginning of the year in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the most affected country. Following the reporting of the first cases imported outside Africa, one in Sweden and three in Pakistan, apparently linked to a new, potentially more dangerous variant, European health authorities are urging the greatest vigilance. They warn that other cases of MPOX could be detected soon in Europe. The resigning French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal also announced the placement of the health system in “state of maximum alertness“. What is this new variant?
