One of the best cult sagas is back? It's its main actor who says so – News Séries
Bruce Campbell announces he will reprise the role of Ash in an animated series called “Evil Dead.”
It's an indestructible franchise. Evil Dead is ready to make its umpteenth return, but this time in the form of an animated series. Bruce Campbell, the iconic Ash Williams, has announced that he will once again lend his voice to the character who has marked several generations of horror movie fans. Indeed, Campbell revealed during an interview with Entertainment Weekly that an Evil Dead animated series is in development. Information to be taken with a pinch of salt for now.
An expected return
The Evil Dead saga began with three cult films led by Bruce Campbell before being remade in 2013. Then in 2015, the series Ash vs Evil Dead continued Ash's adventure for three seasons, although the series was initially planned for five seasons.
The ending of Ash vs Evil Dead left viewers on a cliffhanger, and Bruce Campbell announced at the time that he would no longer reprise the role of Ash due to the physical demands of the character. However, he recently clarified his stance, confirming that he is open to returning for voice work.
“We are developing an animated version, a series,” Campbell told Entertainment Weekly.I'll be in it. I'll be lending my voice to Ash all day, because my voice hasn't aged as much as I have.“
The Future of Franchising
Animation seems like an ideal solution to continue Ash Williams' story while respecting the actor's physical constraints. In addition, two new Evil Dead films are in the works, directed by Sébastien Vaniček – the French director of Vermines – and Francis Galluppi, aiming to renew interest in the franchise after the success of Evil Dead Rise last year.
It seems like the Evil Dead series has evolved from a story about Ash Williams—though he might still pop up from time to time—to an anthology concept about ordinary people fighting extraordinary evil. It's a sure way to keep the brand alive, though hopefully there will be plenty of gory reinventions to keep audiences coming back.
It remains to be seen whether this animated series will actually see the light of day and in what form it will be broadcast.
