Meta Platforms has apologized for removing content from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Facebook and Instagram accounts related to the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Reuters quoted a Meta spokesperson as saying that the content had been restored to the Malaysian prime minister's Facebook and Instagram accounts.

Last Thursday, Ibrahim posted a video of a phone call with a Hamas leader to offer condolences over Haniyeh's death, but it was later deleted, and Anwar accused Meta of cowardice after the post was deleted.

Malaysia had previously complained to Meta over the removal of content, including local media coverage of Anwar's recent meeting with Haniyeh, which was later restored.

Meta said at the time that it did not intentionally suppress voices on its Facebook platform, nor was it restricting content supporting Palestinians.

Meta previously classified Hamas as a “dangerous organization” and bans content praising the movement. The company uses a combination of automated detection and human review on its platforms to remove or classify content.
