Many people spend their summer holidays in their own country – and they like to do so on two wheels. Whether it’s a city trip, a tour through the vineyards or cycling along the lake: cycling offers a completely new perspective on the region.
That's why “Lonely Planet” has chosen the best cycle routes in Germany. BILD presents six of the routes:
The Berlin Wall Trail, 163 kilometres long, easy

The Wall Trail follows – as the name suggests – the traces of the former border wall of the GDR around West Berlin. It runs mostly on old patrol and border control roads. There are signposts and maps at regular intervals. The route is divided into a total of 14 sections, so that it can also be covered in stages.
German Wine Route Cycle Route, 97 kilometres, medium to difficult
You like to drink Wine and love cycling? Then this route is perfect for your Vacation: The German Wine Cycle Route runs through Rhineland-Palatinate, starts in Bockenheim and ends in Schweigen-Rechtenbach on the French border. The route runs through the Palatinate past vineyards and wineries, and there is also a wine route on the Moselle that is perfect for cyclists.

100 Castles Route, 960 kilometers, easy to moderate

The 100 Castles Route takes you through the history of the Münsterland
If you cycle through the Münsterland in North Rhine-Westphalia, you can visit numerous castles on the 100 Castles Route, Gardensfortresses and moated castles. The route consists of four interconnected circular routes, which are divided into north, south, east and west.
Hessen Railway Cycle Route, 245 kilometres, easy to moderate

This trail follows a disused railway line in HesseThe route starts in Hanau, the birthplace of the Brothers Grimm. It ends in Bad Hersfeld. On the way you will pass impressive castles and monastery ruins, but also small towns such as Lauterbach and Fulda and the low mountain ranges of Vogelsberg and Rhön. On the way you can discover old iron bridges and railway carriages as well as tunnels.
Baltic Sea Cycle Route, 1140 kilometres, easy
Who Vacation in northern Germany, should take this route: Between Flensburg on the Danish border and Ahlbeck on the Polish border, the Baltic coasts-Cycle path. Highlights include the cliffs on Rügen, the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Wismar and Stralsund, and the city of Lübeck. The route is fairly flat and offers many opportunities for beach holidays.
The Industrial Heritage Route by bike, 700 kilometres, easy to moderate
The Industrial Heritage Route is completely different: it connects places that tell the history of Ruhr area tell. You will find blast furnaces and gasometers along the way as a reminder of the times of coal mining and steel production. Many of the facilities are now cultural sites, parks or sports centers. The two main routes on the route are the Emscher Park cycle path and the Ruhr area circuit.
