The mysterious grave was discovered by Dr. Ergül Kodas and his team from Mardin Artukulu University. The excavations took place in Çemka Höyük. The age of the dead in the grave, which was located under a clay buildingexperts estimate at 25 to 30 years. And the woman was buried in a very untypical way for that time…

She lay in a curled-up position. Various animals were placed at her side. And the grave was weighted down with an extra heavy stone slab.
The fact is that people in the area did not keep animals at that time. So it seems that these are body parts of wild animals. Among them: the skull of an aurochs, whose lower jaw was placed in front of her feet. Partridge wings, the legs of martens and several sheep bones were also placed next to her.
“The circumstances of this unique burial may indicate that she played a role in the relationship between the human and animal worlds, suggesting that she may have practiced what we today associate with animism and shamanism,” the archaeologists said.

Of course, the experts can only guess why she was buried in such a strange way: “Perhaps she was simply a 'crazy' or 'insane' person who was touched by the 'spirits' of the other world and was therefore feared by the majority of the community,” says Dr. Ergül Kodas, emphasizing: “The remains of the aurochs and the limestone slab were perhaps intended to ensure that she did not return from the dead.”
