Why is the American shot putter wearing a mask at the Olympics? | Sports

American Raven Saunders caused mixed reactions and controversy during the shot put and discus competitions at the Paris 2024 Olympics after appearing in a mask that completely concealed her face.

Saunders, who qualified for the shot put final after finishing fourth in Group B, said wearing the mask helps her get to the playing area ready to compete.

Many athletes try to block out the noise around them in order to perform at their best, but the Sounders mask is one of the most noticeable methods.

This tactic clearly proved effective, as she qualified for the final with an effort of 18.62 metres.

The American, nicknamed “The Hulk” because of the green mask she wore during the Tokyo 2020 competitions, won the silver medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics before being suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency in March 2023 until February 2024 after missing three doping tests.

Saunders, 28, works in racial justice, mental health and animal rights (cows).
