Tonight on TV: do you like Braveheart? Then you will love the adventures of this other Scottish legend – Actus Ciné

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Liam Neeson dons the kilt in a historical fresco.

Two years after shocking audiences in Schindler's List, Liam Neeson pays tribute to another hero of history: Robert MacGregor, a noble Highlander who fought to defend his honor against treachery and barbarity.

Released in 1995, Rob Roy by Michael Caton-Jones takes place in Scotland at the beginning of the 18th century. Robert McGregor, nicknamed Rob Roy, is the leader of a clan of around a hundred villagers who, despite their glaring poverty, remain united. He shares his life with sweet Mary.

But one day, Rob Roy makes the mistake of borrowing a thousand pounds from the Marquis of Montrose, a cynical nobleman, in order to acquire cattle. Cunningham, Montrose's faithful and cruel sidekick, who wields the sword perfectly, decides to steal this sum. Outraged by this betrayal, Rob Roy launches into a fierce fight against a corrupt and treacherous British nobility.

This Scottish fresco, against a backdrop of romance, is therefore brought to the screen by a Liam Neeson fiery. Jessica Lange, who plays his true love, brings sweetness to this lively and ardent plot. While John Hurt plays a marble marquis, Tim Roth lends his features to a relentless swashbuckler.

A Scottish version of Robin Hood

Rob Roy is in line with the great, essential classics of historical cinema, such as Robin Hood by Kevin Reynolds, but above all the unbeatable Braveheart by Mel Gibson. It must be said that this film was released only four months after the film Michael Caton-Jones.

Like William Wallace, Robert McGregor pays homage to a symbol of Scottish independence. This also gives rise to memorable fight scenes, such as the silent final duel, where we only hear the shrill sounds of the sword.

Often compared, Roy Boy and Braveheart share the same subject, offer sumptuous period costumes and Highland landscapes, offer an intoxicating traditional soundtrack, etc.

So, if Braveheart is one of your favorites, there is a good chance that you will also be seduced by the adventures of this other Scottish legend.

Tonight on Arte at 9 p.m.
