Tonight on Canal+: this film that paved the way for the triumph of The Count of Monte Cristo is coming to the platform! – Cinema News

This adventure film, a real success in French cinemas, is coming to Netflix today!

In recent months, the French public has found a real passion for literary adaptations in the cinema. This year, The Count of Monte Cristo starring Pierre Niney was a triumph, with more than 6 million admissions already recorded. But before that, other films inspired by novels by Alexandre Dumas announced this success.

Two films for the price of one

Last year (April 5, 2023), the first part of the adventures of the Three Musketeers (subtitled D'Artagnan) brought together nearly 4.5 million people in theaters. This feature film was shot simultaneously with a second opus, entitled Milady and released a few months later (December 13).

This blockbuster, which brings swashbuckling films back to the forefront, is backed by a prestigious cast. The lead role of D'Artagnan was given to François Civil, while the Three Musketeers are played by Vincent Cassel (Athos), Romain Duris (Aramis) and Pio Marmaï (Porthos) respectively.

Cardinal Richelieu is played by Eric Ruf, and Eva Green plays the venomous Milady de Winter. Finally, King Louis XIII is played by Louis Garrel, and Lyna Khoudri plays Constance Bonacieux in this new adaptation directed by Martin Bourboulon.

A duo behind these two projects

Although these are two separate projects, there is obviously no question of an Alexandre Dumas multiverse in the cinema, there is no doubt that the success of The Three Musketeers announced that of The Count of Monte Cristo. In addition to the bonds of friendship between François Civil and Pierre Niney, the two films have in common the duo Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte.

The duo, who became known to the general public thanks to their adaptation of the play Le Prénom, appear in the credits of the two adaptations of Alexandre Dumas. First as screenwriters of the two parts of The Three Musketeers, then as screenwriters and directors of The Count of Monte Cristo.

An American franchise… in the French style?

“There is a logic of continuity with the way we constructed and envisaged The Three Musketeers”the latter confided to our colleagues at French Film. “It is the sum of our experiences that allows us to embark on such a gigantic project.”

As for him, producer of both projects, Dimitri Rassam described his version of The Three Musketeers “as a response to American franchises”The commercial success of his film has not proven him wrong, and a third part of the adventures of the musketeers has already been announced. “by 2027”.
