New emoji shows mother with dark circles: creative director designs mini face | Life & Knowledge

Tired, exhausted, with deep circles under the eyes. That's how new mother Erin Collett felt with her six-month-old daughter.

She wanted to convey exactly this feeling to her friend in a short message. However, the right one was missing Emoji. So the creative director designed her own mini face. This and other emojis will soon be available to millions users use worldwide.

To date there are more than 3790 emojis. Just not one that emotional state by Erin Collett – with a crying baby by her side, hardly any sleep and constantly new challenges. The creative director then designed her own state of mind.

On her homepage, Collett writes that the emoji does not express slight drowsiness, illness, injury, drowsiness or active sleep like existing faces. Rather, it shows the condition is persistent and extreme sleep deprivation.

The Australian submitted her emoji to the so-called Unicode Consortium back in 2018. The US-based non-profit organization decides which emojis come next.

Six years later, the time has finally come. In the coming weeks, at the beginning of 2025 at the latest, the “Eye Bags Face” will be one of the eight new emojis.

At the World Emoji Awards in July, the little face received an impressive 62.4 percent of all votes. The voting was specifically about the question of which emoji users expect or miss the most. A splash of purple came in second with 9.3 percent of the vote.

The other new emojis that we will be able to send on WhatsApp, Telegram & Co. in the future: a fingerprint, beetroot, a tree without leaves, a harp, a shovel and the flag of the island of Sark in the English Channel. It combines the flag of England (red St. George's Cross on a white background) with the coat of arms of Normandy. This consists of two golden lions on a red background.
