An iconic series from the early 90s is getting a makeover today, via a new adaptation available on Netflix.

“Half sun, and half rain…” If you grew up in the 90s, then the lyrics of this cult theme song are not unknown to you. For the youngest, no it is not the main theme of a series on weather issues, but that of the emblematic Club Dorothée cartoon: Ranma 1/2.

This program is the adaptation of the manga by Rumiko Takahashi. Ranma Saotome is engaged to Akane Tendo, due to the friendship between their two fathers. But the two teenagers do not want to have their hands forced like this, and spend more time bickering than flirting together. Especially since Ranma hides a dark secret: upon contact with cold water, he transforms into a young girl…

Introducing a timeless masterpiece to the new generation

Thirty-five years after the first adaptation which helped to introduce Japanese animation to the general French public, a new version is arriving on Netflix and Crunchyroll. This second series adapted from Ranma 1/2 is produced by MAPPA, the studio to which it notably owes the last season of Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen.

The anime will be offered in simulcast on the platform, meaning that one episode will be available each week. In the Japanese version, the voice actors from the original series return to the same roles.

The French casting, however, is modified: Martin Faliu succeeds Luq Hamett in the role of Ranma, while Akane – who was voiced by Magali Barney in the first version – is played by Clara Soares.

A blend of action, humor and romance, Ranma 1/2 is the perfect cocktail to satisfy the tastes of a wide spectrum of viewers. There is no doubt that the new Netflix series will allow Rumiko Takahashi's masterpiece to become known to the new generation, and to achieve great success on the platform.

The animated series Ranma 1/2 can be found every week in simulcast broadcast on Netflix and Crunchyroll.
