The official length of the highly anticipated Joker sequel is now known! The information has been revealed on the Venice Film Festival websiteFestival where Joker: Folie à deux will be unveiled. Todd Philipps' film will last exactly 2h18.
Is it longer than the first part, released in the fall of 2019? The answer is yes. Joker had a duration of 2h02. That's 16 minutes difference between the two. So it's longer, but far from some XXL durations displayed by feature films and for which we had dedicated a podcast in order to look into this impression of being faced with increasingly long films.
Joker Folie à deux will be unveiled in competition on September 4 at the Venice Film Festival, and will then be released in France on October 2, 2024.
A presentation in Venice, followed by an autumn outing in France
In Joker: Madness, Batman's arch-nemesis teams up with his true love, Harley Quinn. Zazie Beetz will reprise her role as Sophie, while Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland, Harry Lawtey, Gattlin Griffith and Troy Metclaf join the cast in roles that are still being kept secret.
The success of the previous installment allowed Todd Phillips to obtain a larger budget of $150 million (the first one had only cost $55 million) for the sequel.
Released in 2019, the first Joker focused on the iconic figure of Batman's archenemy and painted a portrait of Arthur Fleck, an uncompromising man despised by society.
The feature film was a huge success, grossing over $1 billion worldwide and garnering 12 Oscar nominations. Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Joker, while Hildur Guðnadóttir won the Oscar for Best Original Score. As a reminder, in 2019, the first Joker film won the Golden Lion at the Mostra.
The 2024 Venice Film Festival will be held from August 28 to September 7.
