House of the Dragon: we dismantle this theory on Daemon! – News Series
With the season 2 finale of “House of the Dragon,” some fans have revived a persistent theory about Daemon. Warning: spoilers ahead.
Warning, spoilers. It is recommended to have seen the final episode of season 2 of “House of the Dragon” before continuing to read this article.
Available in its entirety on the MAX platform, season 2 of House of the Dragon did not win over all Game of Thrones fans, especially its final episode, which disappointed some. Especially since they will have to wait until 2026 to be able to discover season 3.
But the disappointments didn't dampen the euphoria of other fans, who loved some of the surprises in the second season finale and dove headfirst into a multitude of theories about what would happen next.
Daemon and the White Walkers
Among the surprising scenes in the House of the Dragon season 2 finale is the vision of Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), given to him by the sorceress Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) at Harrenhal.
It notably sees Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) on the throne, but also the advent of Daenerys Targaryen, with her three dragons, which could answer a very well-known prophecy from the world of Game of Thrones.
But his vision contains other important elements such as his death and the threat of the White Walkers coming from the North in a freezing winter, the enemies evoked by his ancestor Aegon the Conqueror.
And that was all it took for some fans to revive a popular theory, with certainty or with humor, about Daemon's future, namely that he would become a White Walker upon his death, and even more so the Night King, the great enemy in Game of Thrones, defeated by Arya Stark.
“Wait a minute”
For some fans, Daemon and the Night King have some similarities, particularly in their posture and costume style. In Game of Thrones, the Night King is not killed by dragon flames, which some fans see as a sign that he may be a former Targaryen.
In addition, readers of Fire and Blood by George RR Martin, who inspired House of the Dragon, know this: Daemon will die during the Dance of the Dragons. And in the book, Daemon's carcass was not burned. So he could have been resurrected as a White Walker, and perhaps the general he saw in his vision. From there to being the Night King…
“I'm a big fan of the theory that Daemon is the Night King and this vision makes me believe that I'm not living in disillusionment.”
Daemon Is Not The Night King, Here's Why
There is no way Daemon is the Night King, for the simple reason that his story has already been told in Game of Thrones. In episode 5 of season 6, the audience was treated to a vision of Bran Stark explaining the creation of the White Walkers and the Night King.
It is understood that the Children of the Forest, frightened by the First Men who arrived on the continent of Westeros and who were cutting down their trees where they lived, captured one of them. They made him the first White Walker, the Night King, by inserting a dragonglass dagger into his chest.
But their creation backfired and the White Walkers have continued to grow in number for hundreds of years. And we know that the White Walkers were created years before House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. Which means that Daemon can't be the Night King.
“It's not the Night King but one of the generals and it's also quite possible that it's Daemon Targaryen since he died during the Battle of the God's Eye and his carcass wasn't burned. So, since the king is able to resurrect the dead no matter what time it is, it could be Daemon.”
There is no indication that Daemon has not become a White Walker, although the Targaryen's vision does not explicitly indicate that he will become a general of the Night King in the future. One thing is certain: Daemon has understood that the prophecy of his ancestor Aegon the Conqueror is to be taken seriously since he bent the knee before Rhaenyra and said to her in High Valyrian: “Winter is coming“(“Winter is coming“, in the original version), which launches Game of Thrones.
