Apple: These are the new features the iPhone will get with iOS 18

It could be Apple’s most important software update in years: This Monday at 7 p.m. German time (in the ticker live at BILD) begins the opening keynote of WWDC, Apple's major developer conference.

This traditionally involves Apple's software, such as the iPhone operating system iOS. And the upcoming version iOS 18 could be the big AI update for the iPhone.

This is not only suggested by the rumors, but Apple itself has already set its sights on artificial intelligence. When the company introduced its new M4 chip in early Maya great deal of focus was placed on performance in AI computation.

Siri is finally getting smarter

iOS 18 could be a huge update for Apple’s voice assistant Siri: Talks are currently underway with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT.

The presumption: Apple officially announces the collaboration at WWDC – and announces that Siri will in future be powered by a large language model (LLM) like ChatGPT.

Would mean: Siri could have complete conversations, answer complex questions, and would sound much more natural.

Lots of AI features

In addition, artificial intelligence is expected to find its way into many other areas of the iPhone. The list of speculated features is long. Among others, the following AI functions are being discussed for iOS 18:

The AI in the photo app should be able to automatically remove objects from photos
Automatic transcription of voice memos
AI summaries of missed notifications
AI suggestions for replies to text messages and emails
The AI should be able to generate its own emojis that match the text of a message
AI-generated playlists for Apple Music

More freedom for the home screen

But even beyond artificial intelligence, iOS 18 could offer a long-awaited feature for iPhone users: finally more freedom in designing the home screen.

Rumor has it that it will finally be possible to freely arrange the apps on the home screen – and leave empty spaces!

It should also be possible to change the color of app icons.

When will the update be available for my iPhone?

Experience from recent years shows that the new iOS will be presented at WWDC in the summer – but the update will only be delivered with the new iPhone in the fall. The good news: According to rumors, all iPhones that are already running iOS 17 will get the update.

In addition to iOS 18, updates for iPads (iPadOS 18) and MacBooks (macOS 15) are expected. Similar AI functions will probably be the focus here too.
