“An original story that revolutionizes the genre”: rated 4.1 out of 5, it's the best Blumhouse film… and it won 1 Oscar – Cinema News
Released on Wednesday, August 28, “The AI of Evil” is the latest production from the prolific horror company Blumhouse. But do you know what its highest-rated film is? Hint: it's not “Halloween.”
A swimming pool with murky waters, an imaginary friend that we would not like to have, an artificial intelligence that is twisted. This year again, Blumhouse did not skimp on scaring the spectators, something that producer Jason Blum has made a specialty of, via his box, since 2009.
Nine years after its creation, the monster success of Paranormal Activity ($193 million in worldwide revenue for a budget of 15,000 greenbacks) really launched its story and its production method, which relies on reduced budgets in order to maximize profits. It is notably to Blumhouse that we owe Insidious and American Nightmare, some of the recent opuses of M. Night Shymalan (The Visit, Split, Glass), or even the last Halloween trilogy.
Between films and series, the number of his productions is now approaching 150. But do you know which is the best rated feature film produced by Jason Blum? At first glance, it is not easy to think about it, because we associate it more with the company of its producer.
But this is indeed Get Out, Jordan Peele's first film production (before Us, also produced by Blumhouse, then Nope, which was not). And this is easy to understand, because the film gets an average of 4.1 out of 5 (from 26,534 ratings) and it was a huge success. Public first, with 255.6 million dollars in revenue (and 1,145,664 spectators in France), for a production budget estimated at 4.5 million.
And critical, with no less than four Oscar nominations for one award: Best Original Screenplay, in 2018. So no, knowing that, it's not a surprise to see it so high among Blumhouse productions.
Some excerpts from reviews from Internet users who gave the maximum score of 5 out of 5 to “Get Out”
reymi586: “A completely crazy film directed by Jordan Peele. I really enjoyed this work which mixes genres to perfection, between thriller, horror and sometimes even touches of humor, without falling into parody. The actors are fabulous, Daniel Kaluuya And Allison Williams in the lead. A very, very good moment of cinema with an original, fresh story that revolutionizes the genre.”
psychiatry: “Funny, mysterious, distressing, inventive, Get Out is carried by a cast where the smallest role is prepared and cast to perfection. The generosity, the freedom of expression, the devastating humor and above all, and particularly, this eye on the characters (their attitude, their costume … everything is worked with care and precision) prove, once again, that the work accomplished on Get Out is monumental!”
scarface666: “Auteur horror cinema has once again proven that the genre is not dead, when it is put in the hands of talented directors. Get Out is probably one of the best atmospheric horror films since the gems It Follows and The Vvitch (…) The pace of the film is perfect, a long exposition, clues scattered here and there, a little investigation time and a third act that is neither too long nor too short. Add a satisfying conclusion, and we come out with a smile on our lips, and our heads full of thoughts. I just saw a UFO.”

Rainfall_Shadow : “We had to dare to make such a film against the backdrop of the identity crisis in the USA between blacks and whites (racism). This thriller plunges us into ordinary racism, well hidden, horrific and terrible, bloody and cruel. This film is a gem of 2017!!”
Naughty Dog: “The film's great strength is undeniably its atmosphere, which is simply extraordinary. After a remarkable prologue in a single sequence shot, we enter the little life of Chris and Rose, where their romance is very credible, to then slowly drift towards a film with a strange, bizarre, constantly tense atmosphere.
Visually sumptuous and mastered, Get Out is a little slap in the face for a first production with a relevant subject and an intelligent treatment due to its unique character, which even if it contains some clichés inherent to the genre, manages to digest the codes to reuse them in a fair way.”
How nice it is to still be able to be surprised by a film. Get Out is inventive, playful, funny, disturbing and devilishly scary.
moket: “How nice it is to still be able to be surprised by a film. Get Out is inventive, playful, funny, disturbing and devilishly frightening! The unease is palpable from the beginning and the tension builds progressively and very intelligently. The actors are excellent and the atmosphere is superbly uneasy, perfectly underlined by the music. An excellent surprise!”
Cameo: “A first film that depicts the journey of a black American in Trump's racist America. The story merges two films that marked the end of the 60s: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner? and Rosemary's Baby: the social film turns into a horrific closed-door drama. But Jordan Peele comes from comedy: the horror is sometimes defused by laughter that gives this film the accents of a pamphlet. The acting is remarkable and the dramatic tension is maintained until the last shot. A genre film that questions today's America with force and acuity. A very successful first film!”
And you? Were you shaken by Get Out?
