Netflix Top 5: Despite Its No. 1 Rank, This Science Fiction Series Completely Misses Its Finale According to Subscribers – News Séries

Which series took the top spot on Netflix this week? Unsurprisingly, it's “Umbrella Academy” even though it's getting panned by subscribers.

Number 1: Umbrella Academy

Netflix

The Hargreeves siblings have been scattered after the final showdown at Hotel Oblivion, which resulted in a complete reset of their timeline. Stripped of their powers, they must fend for themselves and find a new normal, with varying degrees of success. However, the peculiarities of this strange new world are hard to ignore for long. Their father Reginald, alive and well, has emerged from the shadows and made himself known to the general public, overseeing a powerful and nefarious business empire.

A mysterious group known as the Guardians is holding clandestine meetings, convinced that the reality they live in is a lie and that the truth will soon be revealed. As these new forces conspire around them, the Umbrella Academy must come together one last time—and risk upsetting the uneasy peace they have worked so hard to establish—to finally set things right.

Spectator rating: 4/5

According to AdrienJean48 (0.5/5):

“I really liked the first 2 seasons. The 3rd left me perplexed, the 4th definitely disgusted me. Everything is bad from start to finish. The whole family is now made up of idiots, especially the character of Tom Hopper who now seems completely stupid. I'm not going to dwell on the absurd amount of inconsistencies sprinkled throughout the season, I couldn't do it without spoilers.”

According to Rayryu (1/5):

“I waited 2 years for them to botch the series in 6 episodes??? They destroyed the characters, the ones they had developed for 3 seasons.”

According to Gto9 (1/5):

“I watched the last season. I didn't like it, especially the end. The first season, the second season, and the 3rd are good but nothing more…”

Why does it work?

It's one of Netflix's most popular series and it's saying goodbye after 4 seasons. Subscribers rushed to these six new episodes that conclude the plot. And one thing is for sure, they didn't like at all the way the members of the Umbrella Academy ended. And we agree with them.

Number 2: Murder Instructions

BBC

Five years ago, Sal Singh murdered his girlfriend, high school student Andie Bell. The case was closed: the police were convinced that Sal was the culprit. As was the whole town. However, Pip Fitz-Amobi, a smart and determined young girl, isn't so sure, and she's determined to prove it. But if Sal Singh isn't the murderer, the real killer of Andie is still out there, and who knows what he'll do to stop Pip from finding out the truth?

Spectator rating: 3.6/5

According to Bob Razowski (1/5):

“It's a 6-episode teenage series so we didn't expect much. And it's as bad as we imagined. The mediocre acting, the stupid decisions of the main character, a storyline that's been seen, seen, seen and seen again… in short, the perfect cocktail for a bland series that we'll just put on in the background one afternoon if we really have nothing else to do.”

According to Nehla Zerry (2.5/5):

“I had read and found the book rather good. However, seeing the story brought to the screen, I realize that the plot is actually quite simple and not very original. What was okay in the novel ultimately seems rather flat. In addition, I am not very excited by the acting, nor by the soundtrack for that matter…”

According to Sebastien H. (3/5):

“The beginning of the series is a bit long. After that, it's quite nice. The ending is very well put together and pleasant to watch. The British atmosphere is there.”

Why does it work?

Second week in a row for Murder Mode d'emploi, a detective series in 6 episodes of only 45 minutes. Subscribers were hooked by its gripping story and its heroine, played by the adorable Emma Myers, who we discovered in Mercredi two years ago. Although this English production is aimed at a fairly young audience, it is nonetheless an effective entertainment that allows everyone to play budding investigators for a season.

Number 3: Elite

Netflix

Omar and Nadia reunite, graduation approaches for the students of Las Encinas, and a final mystery will push friends, as well as enemies, to the brink.

Spectator rating: 3.7/5

According to FranckPanpan (1/5)

I was expecting a tribute to the previous characters but no. There are several stories that will remain on an open ending and especially one of them! The story of Ivan and Patrick and that's a PITY!

According to Luisa (0.5/5)

Honestly BAD. Elite was my favorite series but since the end of season 4 it has disappointed me from season to season! As a fan of Elite I had to watch season 8 but honestly this season has no interest, everything is predictable, boring, dull and BAD!!

According to Laura Sk (1/5)

Elite is getting worse and worse, and this season is incredibly boring. Everything is predictable, it's long, it's boring, we're a long way from the beginning of the series, too bad.

Why does it work?

Over the course of the many seasons of Elite, Netflix subscribers have become detached from the Spanish series but they are still there for the final round of episodes, and to see how the series ends. Nevertheless, the feedback is unanimously negative and each week, the series loses a place in the top.

Number 4: The New Rise of Simone Biles

Netflix

Follow gymnast Simone Biles as she seeks to maintain her personal life and mental health while training for the upcoming Olympics.

Spectator rating: 3.5/5

There are no comments for this series.

Why does it work?

With the Paris Games just wrapping up, Netflix has timed Simone Biles's New Rise to the occasion perfectly. The documentary series looks back at the gymnast's ordeal and sheds light on the issue of athletes' mental health.

Available since July 17, it was during the Games – and propelled by Simone Biles' gold medals in gymnastics – that the series rose to the Netflix top to tell the story of how this immense champion overcame her traumas, between an unhappy childhood with a negligent mother, the debacle of the Tokyo Games and the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of a former doctor for the national gymnastics team. A series that certainly does not leave subscribers indifferent.

Number 5: Shahmeran

Netflix

The long-awaited prophecy has been fulfilled. Shahmeran begins to awaken in Sahsu's body, initiating a process that will only be completed after arduous trials. Meanwhile, Lilith emerges from the well where she was imprisoned, ready to take revenge for the betrayal she endured for love. Cihan accompanies her in her exploration of the world, which she finds again after centuries. Lilith's anger has left Maran very isolated, with the exception of Sahsu. In the midst of this battle, Sahsu and Maran's love will be put to the test, while Shahmeran and Lilith will never stop fighting for the “cycle of the universe”.

Spectator rating: 3.9/5

According to Elodie D. (5/5):

“A very good surprise: a romance, psychology, actors and secondary roles very well established. An intelligent and more mature Twilight against a backdrop of social war. Looking forward to seeing season 2.”

According to LB (4/5):

“Good series overall, very good actors, very successful images, scenography, production, music. Story a little slow, we get bored at times, but a captivating last episode where each piece of the puzzle falls into place. I really enjoyed following the character of Shahsu, his quest for the truth and his struggle with his mental health. The story is well put together, can't wait to see what season 2 (if there is one) has in store for us.”

According to Lyah (3.5/5)

“A very pretty sensual romance mixed with fantasy. The photography is sublime and the actors all do well in their roles. One downside, however: quite a few lengths and a rather slow pace.”

Why does it work?

A love story with a fantastic atmosphere, such is the recipe for Shahmeran, the new success made in Turkey produced by Netflix. Shortened to only six episodes (compared to eight for the first), the second season nevertheless seems to have lived up to fans' expectations. The success of the series will however not allow a season 3 to see the light of day, the plot having been carried through to its conclusion!
